Hey everyone, maybe you know I have been working in startups of different scales as a software engineer for 4 years. So I want to write about this topic. Working for a startup is attractive -sometimes magnetically so. The job descriptions are very inviting for instance cool working environment, flexible hours, a shareholder system, taking more responsibility, etc. It looks exciting, let’s check it out.

Please note: These are my opinions and It’ll be different for other startups/people.

First of all, I saw some startups working like a corporate and slow. I won’t mention it to them. I’ll mention underdog startups!

The Pros of Working for a Startup

1. You Will Create Value with your Colleagues

It’s my favorite section because creating something new motivates It’s not only about the product It’s about the whole process. You’ll contribute to all departments and it naturally creates a company culture. It’s pretty good stuff for me.

And If you want to start your own business someday, startups will be a great playground.

2. You’ll be Freedom(?)

Freedom looks like an advantage but I’m not sure about that. Let’s look into it together. If you’re working for a startup you will have a lot of flexibility around working hours. It is good stuff but not realistic for startups. Because maybe you have flexible hours for the normal day but in a startup, you have to create more with fewer people. So sometimes you have to work on nights or after your normal working plan.

At the same time on vacation, you have to move your PC in case something going to wrong.

3. You can be Shareholder!

Many startups give a stock option to their employees. It’s necessary because you deserve this. Of course, It depends on your seniority level, contribution, the risk is taken or etc but is still important. When the startup you work for exits, you can earn times of your salary.

Hint: About 90% of startups fail. (source)

4. You will learn lots of stuff about your job

You will learn, You have to learn lots of stuff in a limited time. Because you have to faster than your competitor or big companies. You have to do more stuff than others so you’ll learn lots of stuff and the important thing is, this is not theoretical! I think this subject is the second important thing in my career because if I don’t know how to develop some things, I’m learning quickly with this pressure.

5. You’ll meet with the other outliers

People who work at startups tend to be passionate, ambitious, and interesting. Startups often hire people from nontraditional backgrounds who are hustlers or hackers in their own right, so you’re bound to meet a few characters on your startup journey.

Everyone wants to seek common ground and startups are a very fit area for this!
